Chapter Eighteen

Three hours after Harmeet Singh had been carried out of the Villa Montalvo on a stretcher, the members of Noah’s makeshift team where all huddled in the dimly lit safe room. The atmosphere was thick with anticipation. Around a sturdy, unadorned table sat Noah, Neil, Jenny, and Wally. A lamp with a low-wattage bulb stood between them, more shadows than light playing across their faces as they waited for news.

Noah sat with his back against the wall, his posture relaxed but his eyes sharp and calculating. His gaze intermittently swept over his companions, an unspoken question in every glance. He hadn’t breathed a word about the encounter with Ralph, the information on Marco sitting like a lead weight in his chest. The current situation was already a tangled web of uncertainty, and he was reluctant to weave further strands of doubt into the mix. His instincts screamed caution, especially around Neil and Jenny. Adrian’s reach was far and their methods insidious. Noah couldn’t afford the luxury of trust—not when betrayal might be seated at this very table with him. In the game of shadows and deception, Noah knew the fewer cards on the table, the better. For now, he would hold his newfound knowledge close, a hidden ace in a deck full of jokers.

Wally, his fingers drumming a silent rhythm on the wooden surface, appeared the most outwardly agitated. His mind was still replaying the demise of his drone, the plans that had gone awry, and the close call they’d all just survived. Nevertheless, despite the setback, there was a fire in his eyes—a spark that spoke of his readiness to dive back into the fray.

Neil was the picture of contemplation, his features set in a stern line as he held the screen of his phone in front of his eyes. He leaned forward, an elbow resting on the table, face lit up in the garish light of his social media feed.

As for Jenny, she sat looking bored, her chin resting on one hand, her eyes occasionally flickering to the screen of her husband’s phone.

“It just broke,” Neil muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. “Turn the TV on.”

The faces around the table turned to the television screen mounted to the wall as Noah switched it on and set it to the news.

On the screen, a reporter stood outside the hospital, her expression somber, a crowd of onlookers and journalists behind her. The anchor’s voice came through clear and composed. “We’re now going live to Amanda Chen outside St. Clara’s Medical Center. Amanda, what can you tell us about the situation?”

Amanda Chen looked directly into the camera, her professional calm belying the gravity of her report. “John, the tech world is reeling from the sudden death of Harmeet Singh, a giant in the field of artificial intelligence. She was rushed to the hospital after falling gravely ill at a charity gala earlier tonight.”

The camera panned slightly to show the hospital’s entrance, where the flashing lights of police cars cast a stark contrast to the quiet night.
